There’s nothing like a free movie on Fridays to kick the weekend off right. This summer, our Focus Film Festival will screen three free movies—one for each month. Each film will screen on its scheduled date at 4 pm PST on the Focus Features Facebook page. From comedy to action to romance, it’s a summer-long ticket to fun. The Focus Film Festival will also give budding filmmakers a chance to show what they've got by submitting a short film in a special contest, details to be announced this summer.
The Kids Are All Right | Friday, June 29
To cap off Pride Month, we’re screening Lisa Cholodenko’s family comedy The Kids Are All Right on Friday, June 29. Annette Bening and Julianne Moore play Nic and Jules, your typical married couple with two kids—Laser (Josh Hutcherson) and Joni (Mia Wasikowska)—dealing with getting their daughter off to college, worrying about their son’s skateboarding stunts, and suddenly meeting for the first time the donor dad (Mark Ruffalo) that helped make their family possible. “Fierce, funny, smart and overflowing with love,” says The Los Angeles Times, “this unconventionally conventional film sits squarely in the family values camp, which is exactly where it belongs.”
Hot Fuzz | Friday, July 13
On Friday, July 13, get ready for an action-packed ride along with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in Edgar Wright’s Hot Fuzz. Top cop Nick Angel’s (Pegg) crime-fighting days seemed to be at an end when he is reassigned to the sleepy village of Sandford and partnered with puppy dog PC Danny Butterman (Frost). But when the bodies start to pile up, the boys prove they are ready for anything, from renegade swans to murderous town folk. Both ridiculously fun and funny, Hot Fuzz is the best of all possible worlds. As AV Club points out, “Hot Fuzz is everything an action-comedy should be. It achieves through parody what most films in the genre can't accomplish straight.”
Pride & Prejudice | Friday, August 24
On Friday, August 24, we close out the summer with one of the most romantic movies of all time, Joe Wright’s Pride & Prejudice. Based on Jane Austen’s masterpiece, the film features Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet, a remarkable young woman who is perceptive about everything except her own heart. When her every meeting with Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen) only confirms her contempt for the overbearingly proud gentleman, it’s clear to everyone but her the root of her prejudice. Nominated for four Academy Awards®, Pride & Prejudice is, according to USA Today, “a stellar adaptation, bewitching the viewer completely and incandescently with an exquisite blend of emotion and wit.”
