Focus Features to release the international espionage thriller The Debt

John Madden's much anticipated espionage thriller The Debt will be distributed for Miramax by Focus Features and Universal Pictures International. The thriller incorporates two generations of stars in a historical suspense yarn that spans several decades and crosses many international borders. In 1997, celebrated Mossad agents Rachel (Helen Mirren) and Stefan (Tom Wilkinson) are confronted with shocking news about their old team member David (Ciar'an Hinds). To discover the truth, the film moves back and forth between the present and a daring 1966 mission during which the trio--with Jessica Chastain as a younger Rachel, Marton.Csokas as a younger Stefan and Sam Worthington as a younger David--tracked down Nazi war criminal Vogel (Jesper Christensen) in East Berlin. After the mission, the team returned to Israel as national heroes and historical figures. But, as the film unfolds, it becomes clear that history and truth don't always line up perfectly.

The film's global distribution brings together Miramax with Focus Features and Universal Pictures International. "Given Focus' tradition of dramatic thrillers that unfold in exotic locations, The Debt makes for a worthy addition to our 2011 release slate," said Focus CEO James Schamus. "The picture is taut with nail-biting tension, and spotlights powerful performances from its gifted cast. We are also excited to partner with Miramax and its new team."
