The Globe and Mail on Hotel Films from North By Northwest to Somewhere

Inspired by Sofia Coppola’s new film Somewhere, Jennie Punter of The Globe and Mail took a look at “Why hotels make such good film sets.” Her whimsical exploration takes the form of a helpful list. Her first lesson, “Under one roof, one finds many storeys, er, stories,” is culled from both the classic Grand Hotel and more mordern films, like Quentin Tarantino and others’s quartet Four Rooms and Hawke’s Chelsea Walls.” And while she pulls hotel advice from a range of films from The Shining, Barton Fink, and North by Northwest, she never fully explains what we learn about hotels from Somewhere.
